First Annual Scott Stary Memorial Spice Fest To Be Held This Weekend
As a part of a fund-raising campaign the first annual Spice Fest Fundraiser will be held Saturday, April 9 at Spare Time Bowl, Bar and Grill in Turtle Lake. The event will take place from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. and will be in honor of longtime resident and businessman, Scott Stary.
Scott, well-known throughout the region for his Horseradish, smoked fish, venison jerkey, potato dumplings, Italian sausage, pickles and his Carolina reaper peppers, lost a long battle with Acute Myelois Leukemia last year. Scott’s daughter, Amy Johnson, has been given the honor of being nominated as a candidate for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) “Visionary of the Year” fundraising campaign. This campaign is a 10-week fundraising competition judged solely on a philanthropic basis. All money raised will go directly to LLS and the forefront of the fight to cure blood cancer.
“I have witnessed first-hand the debilitating effects of blood cancer as my Dad recently lost his battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia,” Amy explained. “Watching the suffering my Dad endured because of this disease left me feeling that there has to be more they can do… there just HAS to be a better way. My campaign will be dedicated to my Dad and his fight.”
Today, more than 1 million Americans are living with blood cancer. Every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with one of these cancers – and every nine minutes, someone dies. Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20. But with the help of charitable contributions, survival rates are increasing. LLS-funded research has produced new treatments to enhance and prolong lives. The five-year survival rate for patients with leukemia has more than tripled and in some cases quadrupled in the last 60 years.
“You can make a difference. By making a tax-deductible contribution to my campaign, you will support researchers who are working to find cures for these cancers. Your donation will prevent someone from losing a child, sibling, parent or loved one and allow LLS to continue funding life-saving research. Go to www.spicefest22.com and click the DONATE button to make an online donation or, if preferred, mail a check payable to LLS with my name in the memo line to: Amy Johnson, 2521 Genevieve Way, Waunakee, WI 53597. All donations must be received prior to May 14, 2022.”
“Want to do more? Join me at one of the fundraising events I’m holding over the course of my campaign. Anything you can contribute to these events (donations, silent auction items, etc.) would also be a wonderful addition and would certainly increase the amount raised for LLS.”
Spice Fest will feature events such as a salsa cook-off, silent & live auction, raffles, hot sauce tasting, 9-pin bowling tournament, nacho bar, live music by Mark Stary, kids activities and much more. Salsa and bowling registration begins at 3:30 p.m.
