Hay River Quilters Present Quilt

Karen Kahl, left, representing the Hay River Quilters, presented veteran Gary Solum, the annual Honor Quilt at the Veteran’s Day Program held Friday morning, November 11, at the Turtle Lake School. The Hay River Quilters began a tradition of giving quilts to veterans in 2015 when they were asked to help make quilts to welcome home the 950th Army National Guard Engineering Company returning from their one-year deployment in Afghanistan. In 2016 they decided to continue making quilts to honor local veterans. Each year they present “Quilts of Valor” at Veteran’s Day programs in Almena Elmentary, Turtle Lake Schools, Barron Area Schools, Ridgeland Elementary and Prairie Farm Schools. Gary Solum is a member of Donalds-Hylkema Post 137 of Turtle Lake. He served in the National Guard and was called to action during the Berlin Crisis.

Gary deserves this quilt. He is always marching in the parade, at every funeral of a fellow service member and veterans day celebrations. Thank you Gary for your dedication and your service.
