Man Convicted Of The 2004 Killing Of Six Hunters Has Died
The tragedy that shocked this area of Wisconsin Sunday, November 21, 2004, has taken another turn as the man who was sentenced to serve six life sentences, Chai Vang, has reportedly died while confined in prison.
Vang, 57, died Wednesday, June 10 at a hospital, the Department of Corrections confirmed. Vang had recently been transferred to the Oshkosh Correctional Institution.
Vang, from St. Paul, MN at the time, was convicted of the mass killings of six Wisconsin hunters on property near Exeland, in Sawyer County. He also wounded two others. Killed were Robert Crotteaau, 42; Joey Crotteau, 20, Denny Drew, 55, Allan Laski, 43, Mark Roidt, 28 and Jessica Willers, 27, all of the Rice Lake area. Wounded were Terry Willers and Lauren Hesebeck.
Vang argued that he had shot the hunters in self defense as he had been threatened and call racial slurs by the property owners. At the time of his arrest Vang said one of the hunters had fired the first shot.
According to Wisconsin Circuit Court Access a notice of case status change on Thursday, June 11 indicated Vang was deceased on Wednesday, June 10. No cause of death is indicated due to privacy health laws preventing the disclosure of such information.
