Business owners, residents, municipal representatives and repre- sentatives from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation gathered Tuesday afternoon and evening for a presentation on the upcoming roundabouts to be constructed on Hwy. 8 & 63 in the Village of Turtle Lake. One will be put in at the Cty. K and Norway Street intersection, by the Casino, and the other is slated to be put in at the intersection of Hwy. 63 north and Maple Street North.
The Lions Eye Bank of Wisconsin presented the Turtle Lake Lions Club with the Knight of Sight Fellowship. Making the presentation was PDG Karl Schmid, Board of Directors from Lions District 27E1 to Club President Oreen Nottom.
With forecasted deficits looming, the Turtle Lake School Board and administration discussed possible referendum options and established a timeline to put forth the referendum questions to the public in the Presidential Election in November of this year. The board is presently discussing three options – $4.5-million, 5$5-million and a $5.5-million referendum.
Twenty-two summer school students at Turtle Lake Schools have been hard at work preparing for this year’s theater class play. The theme for this year’s production is Summer School Soul Storm and will be presented Thursday, June 23 at 11:15 a.m. in the high school auditorium. This is the 13th year of summer school productions and the public is invited to attend. Students include Meeghan Allen, Taylor Andersen, Caleb Blegen, Kylee Christianson, Paige Davis, Hailey Duffee, Emma Glaubitz, Autumn Heller, Jackalyn Heller, Avery Hubbard, Jaylee Humphrey, Ella Jansen, Alexa Kamish, Tianna Lochner, Makayala Lopez, Mercedes Madison, Ryanne Nykanen, Mckayla Pittman, Cami Popenhagen, Luke Popenhagen, Kate Torgerson and Mason Quade. Instructors are Mark Stary and Manfred Schonauer.

What began as the second day of summer vacation fishing with Grandpa quickly turned into a life saving effort by a twelve-year old grandson who demonstrated cool and calm when others might have panicked. And that cool and calmness can be attributed to 70-year old Richard Nelson still being alive. Richard and his grandson, Kyle Huhn, were heading out fishing on Little Bass Lake, between Cumberland and Luck, last Tuesday, June 6th, and had just reached their destination on the lake.
MPK Co., more noticeably known as Glo Paint, of Clayton, WI, has announced the launching of it’s latest glow-in-the-dark paint product line in mid-June 2006. These new paints will be available in red, blue, green, yellow, orange, pink, purple and natural and will glow very close to their day colors.
Six-year old Ava Engler and grandpa Pete Waldo, both of Ham Lake, MN, proudly display a 28-1/2” walleye Ava landed. She was fishing with grandpa and mom and dad, Mr. and Mrs. Greg Engler, on Mille Lacs Memorial Day weekend when she caught the tropy. To top it off, Ava was using a Barbie fishing pole. Ava is the great-granddaughter of Arlo and Loretta Waldo of Turtle Lake.
Come and enjoy a wonderful evening of “Music In The Park” with on of Turtle Lake’s own “homegrown boys”. Wednesday, June 21 is the first of three Music In The Park series sponsored by the Turtle Lake Music Boosters and the Turtle Lake Community. Mark Stary and Dan Neale will be center stage for an acoustic performance.

Six young ladies will compete in the 14th Annual Junior Miss Almena Area pageant on Friday evening, June 21st, at the Almena school. This year’s candidates are Renee Ellefson, Tina Herrera, Krystal Johnson, Kimberly Pape, Nicole Rundhaug and Megan Wohlk.
Impact Seven, in Almena, Wisconsin, would like to invite everyone to the grand opening of the Greater Wisconsin Business Center on Saturday, June 22, 1996. The festivities will commence at 10:00 a.m. with the program and dedication ceremony followed by tours from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
For the second consecutive year, Laker Matt Torgerson qualified for the Division 3 State Golf Tournament. The tournament, a two day, 18 hole per day tourney, is held at the beautiful, and very challenging, University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.
Senior outfielder, Mike Mumm, of Clayton, was one of five UW-River Falls Falcons named to the 1996 All-WSUC Northern Division Baseball team. Mike batted .271 with 39 hits and 32 runs during the season. He had three doubles, one triple and eight homem runs. He had 26 RBIs ad stole six bases.

As the familiar strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” filled the Turtle Lake High School gymnasium, the Class of 1986 entered to participate in the 70th Commencement Exercises on Sunday, June 1. Faith Strasser opened the program by giving the Salutatory Address. Following the presentation of scholarships, Jodi Hart delivered the Valedictory Address.
Ed Yousten has earned a very special recognition achieved by only a few blood donors. At the last visit of the Red Cross Bloodmobile in Turtle Lake, Ed received his 10 gallon pin.
The Almena Community Women announced that the winner of their “Give Almena An Identity” slogan contest is Sharon Mausolf. Her winning slogan, “Welcome to Almena: Small in size, Big on Friendliness”, will be used on the Almena Commercial Club’s Float and will eventually be put on several signs posted at the Village limits. Mrs. Mausolf received $30.00 for her winning entry.
The Turtle Lake Babe Ruth baseball team started the season off fast, scoring six runs in the second inning and held on for a 6-5 win at the Burleigh Grimes baseball field in Clear Lake on Tuesday, June 3. Brent Hinck was the winning pitcher for Turtle Lake, going all seven innings for the win, striking out eight and only giving up five hits.

The search for the 1977 Queen of the Lakes and Snows to succeed reigning Queen Janelle Ostermann is now underway. The contest is open to all girls of the Turtle Lake School District between the ages of 17 and 20. Turtle Lake businessmen are also urged to sponsor a girl in the contest.
Mike Raffesberger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Raffesberger of Almena, won the Barron County Annual 4-H Tractor Safety Contest hel June 6 at the Rice Lake fairgrounds. The event is co-sponsored by the Rural Insurance Companies, Farm Bureau affiliates and the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation.
Zion Ev. Lutheran Church of Almena Township is observing its 75th anniversary as a congregation with a special Service of Thanksgiving this Sunday, June 13, at 10L00 a.m. The Rev. L. W. Meyer, Sr., a former pastor, will be the liturgist and Rev. William Staab will deliver the anniversary sermon.
At its regular monthly meeting on June 1, the Barron County Health Committee began planning for the county-wide swine flu vaccination program which will be offered to all residents of Barron County this summer and fall.
