It was nearly white-out conditions Tuesday afternoon when one of the season’s largest snowstorms hit the area, dumping four to eight inches of snow throughout the region. Emergency personnel were busy with accidents and vehicles in the ditch throughout Barron and Polk County. Schools were closed or experienced early release on Tuesday, and many in the area had two-hour delays or no school on Wednesday.
In what could be described as a contentious relationship between industry and Village, GreenWhey Energy, Inc. representatives gave the Village board an update of what’s happening at the January board meeting. GreenWhey reps were on hand for a project update.
It is February and that means that it is tournament time for wrestling teams across Wisconsin. Heading into the 55th Annual Lakeland Conference Tournament, junior Morgan Vennie leads the Turtle Lake/Clayton team with 16 wins and 11 pins. Others with some good win and pin totals include freshman Tyler Quade with 14 wins and 5 pins, freshman Brendan Swagger with 12 wins and 5 pins, and junior Jordan Rouzer with 8 wins and 4 pins.
The Lakers jumped out to a 10-0 lead four minutes into their matchup with the Clayton Bears, forcing the Bears into a timeout. Coming out of the timeout the Lakers kept the momentum going, extending their lead to 17-3 following a three-point play by Jonah Kahl. The Bears didn’t lose their cool and systematically clawed their way back into the game, eventually grabbing a 23-22 lead. The Bears led by three at the intermission and outscored the Lakers in the second half, rolling to a 61-55 win.
Freshman Kailey Ketz knocked down a three to get the game started and the Clayton Bears never trailed after that, running away with a 58-42 win in round two of the Turtle Lake/Clayton rivalry Friday night in Clayton.

On Saturday, January 21, a team of thirty-two volunteers boarded a coach bus from Parkview United methodist Church in Turtle Lake and traveled to San Bernito, Texas on their first leg of the annual Mission to Mexico trip. From San Bernito the group rented a pair of vans and drove into Rio Bravo, Mexico where their work began.
Attention voters in the Turtle Lake school district. The Turtle Lake Prent Teacher Student Association (TLPTSA) is pleased to announce they will be hosting a Turtle Lake School Board Candidates’ Forum for the two positions on the Turtle Lake School District Board of Education.
The Laker wrestling team placed five wrestlers in the top three positions at the Conference wrestling meet held Saturday, February 4 in Cameron. Placing for the Lakers were Lance Hougdahl, Gabe Stoppelmoor and Mike Jones – Conference Champions; Pat O’Connell – third place; and Bryant Rouzer – second place.
The first game went into double overtime before the Lakers prevailed, and for a while it looked as if overtime would be needed before the Lakers closed the game out with a 7-3 run and earned the 56-51 win over the Clear Lake Warriors. Kyle Wick led the Lakers with 20. Dave Sollman and John Wick added 10 each.
The Laker gals, playing one of their better games of the year for three quarters, grabbed a quick lead to start the fourth, only to watch the Clear Lake Warriors reel off twelve straight and steal the 34-22 win. Kayla Scheps led the Lakers with 9 points.

A Star Building Aw-ard for incorporating energy-saving features into the new Turtle Lake schools building has been presented to the Turtle Lake School District by Northern States Poser Company. Recently, School District Administrator Mark Collins received an NSP Star Building Plaque and energy rebate check for $14,786.88 from Mike Schuster, NSP district troubleman.
The Lakers traveled to Siren last Tuesday night and manhandled the Dragons in every aspect of the game, coming away with an impressive 90-55 win. Ryan Schradle led all scorers with 22. Matt Richter added 20, Tadd Peterson 18 and Matt Torgerson 13.
On a blustery winter’s night the Laker gals traveled to Clear Lake for a conference matchup with the Warriors. Once again the Lakers hung in there but came up short at the end as the Warriors earned the 54-34 win. Maisa Rouzer led the Lakers with 15. Teresa Kasper added 11 and Sam Koenig 8.
Ben Naylor and Nick Bylander scored pins for the Lakers. Chad Andersen won by tech fall, 20-5, and Andy Koenig picked up a 13-0 major decision, but that was not quite enough as Flambeau edged the Lakers 34-33 last Thursday night in Lakeland Conference wrestling.

January 30, 1986
Ashley Marie Louise, daughter of DeeAnna and Michael Rubins of Rock Island, Illinois is the first great great grandchild of Mrs. August Ostermann of Almena. Also present were Ashley, her mother, DeeAnna, Mrs. Marie Goelz of Barrington, Illinois, great grandmother, and Mrs. Sandra Belyea of Barrington, Illinois, the grandmother.
A large gas tanker came to a precarious stop early Tuesday morning as the driver attempted to turn into the street leading to the Heintz Oil Company bulk tanks to deliver his load of gas. The tractor apparently went a little wide on the corner and was caught in the snow in the sitch just off the road bed.
The Turtle Lake girls added two more victories to their record as they downed Cameron 51-26 last Thursday at home and won the Lakers contest by defeating Shell Lake 58-35 Monday night at home. Melinda Hinck led the winning effort against Cameron with 16 points. Joleyn Young and Sue Leschisin added 11 each. Joleyn Young led the Lakers against Shell Lake with 19. Sue Leschisin added 17 and Melinda Hinck had 10.
The Turtle Lake Lakers made it two in a row Friday night, shrugging off a slow start to blast the Cameron Comets 69-52 at Turtle Lake. Cory Kleinschmidt led all scorers with 24 points. Ron Hanson added 23 and Dave Anderson had 15.
Riding the championships of Tom Klugow and Paul Hansen, the Turtle Lake JV wrestling team took home the second place team trophy from the Turtle Lake Invitational on Saturday. Ten teams were entered in the tournament and each team was allowed a maximum of 12 wrestlers gaining team points for their team.

Turtle Lake School teachers have voiced a real concern over the fact that the contract negotiation sessions that have been in progress for nearly one year now have still not resulted in a settlement for this school year and it is now time to begin negotiations for the coming year.
Racing action at the Sno-Lakers Drag ‘76 will get underway at 10 a.m. this Sunday, February 8 on Horseshoe Lake just north of the village on County Trunk T at King’s Kove. A number of new events have been added to this year’s racing card.
The Turtle Lake Lakers chalked up another win Tuesday, January 27, as they defeated the Weyerhaeuser Wildcats 63-41 on the local floor. Marv Dietrich led all scorers with 20 points and 12 rebounds, followed by Dave Slack with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Turtle Lake Laker wrestlers hosted the Bruce Red Raiders on Thursday, January 29 and were defeated by a score of 32-24. Winning for the Lakers were Warren Gross (98-lbs.), Pete Heidtke (155-lbs.), Rick Swenson (167-lbs.) and Mike Schneider (Hwt.).
