“Too many people think underage drinking is harmless,” said Bar- ron County Sheriff Fitzgerald. “That’s not true. Every year we hear about teens being seriously injured or dying as a result of drinking alcohol provided by an adult.” During this Prom and Graduation season, a reminder from the Barron County Community Coalition and local law enforcement to parents who may want to host a post-prom or post-graduation party and serve alcohol: Parents Who Host, Lose The Most: Don’t be a party to teenage drinking.
The Turtle Lake High School junior class held their prom on Saturday, April 23rd. Kailey Teich and Collin Hoffman were crowned queen and king. Members of the prom court were Makenzi Gehrman, Natalie Garcia, King Collin Hoffman, Queen Kailey Teich, Mariah Capra, Liz Anderson, Erik Bauer, Jared Beach, Kyle Waite and Joe Schalley.
The Turtle Lake/Clayton track team traveled to Clear Lake on Tuesday, April 19th to participate in the Clear Lake Invite. The girls 4 x 400m relay team of Mary Hoffman, Kelly Catlin, Makayla Fagerlin and Kim Peetz finished first and Erik Bauer finished first in the high jump.
The Clayton/Turtle Lake baseball team knocked off Shell Lake and Siren before dropping a 8-2 decision to St. Croix Falls this past week. Cameron Bodsberg was one for two at the plate, including a hit-by-pitch, and scored the lone two runs. Zach VanHeuklom was one for two and Dylan Anderson was one for three.

Tia Nelson, the daughter of Gaylord Nelson, made a stop at Turtle Lake Monday morning to speak to the students about her father and his accomplishments regarding the environment in recognition of Earth Week. Nelson was named Executive Secretary of the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands in October 2004.
Questions were raised during the Public Works departmental reports of the Village board meeting regarding problems with the centerfuge at the new wastewater treatment plant. During Public Works Director Katie Goin’s report discussion broke out regarding the upgrading costs of the centerfuge at the sewer plant. The centerfuge problem has been a constant discussion and according to Ms. Goin, “hasn’t worked the way she would like it to, or thought it should.”
After dropping a 17-7 decision earlier in the week to the Luck Cardinals, the Turtle Lake/ Clayton girls grabbed a 12-5 lead in the third over Shell Lake and held on to win 22-19 at home.Becca Paulson paced the girls, going four for four at the plate with three runs scored and seven runs batted in. She also earned the win with two innings of relief pitching, giving up two runs on one hit, four walks and three strikeouts.
The Clayton/Turtle Lake track teams participated in the Clear Lake meet on Tuesday, April 18 and came away with four firsts, three from the guys and one from the girls. For the guys, Dylan O’Connell grabbed the gold in the 1600m run in a time of 5:28. Pat O’Connell took first place in the 800m run in a time of 2:19. Zach Pletzer closed out the long distance events with a first place in the 3200m run in 12:29. Fo rthe girls, Breanna Thompson captured first in the long jump with a leap of 15” 8-1/2”.
A four-run first for the Evergreens set the tone for the game when the Clayton/Turtle Lake baseball squad traveled to Northwood on Thursday, April 13. The C/TL squad never recovered, dropping a 7-1 contest. Erik Halverson took the tough loss, pitching five innings, giving up seven runs, two earned, on five hits, five walks, a hit batsman and a pair of strikeouts. Ryan Donath, Erik Halverson and Cainen Winger were all one for three hitting.

The Turtle Lake Police Department welcomes Mr. Alan Gabe as the new full-time employee to fill the position established by the Universal Cops grant. Prior to accepting this position, Al has worked as a Reserve Officer for the Barron County Sheriff’s Department and as a part-time officer for the Village of Turtle Lake.
Jeff Becker presented a check for $1,000.00 to Michelle Novak, Physical Education instructor at Turtle Lake Schools. Several businesses joined with the local Super Valu store to sponsor the sale of Hometown Stars Cereal, featuring pictures of the State Champion volleyball and football teams on the cereal boxes. The check represents the proceeds from the cereal sales.
Five Turtle Lake wrestlers qualified for the State Folk-Style Wrestling Tournament at Stevens Point by placing in the top two at the Somerset Regional. They are Michael Knight, Ben Biron, Kenton Olsvig, Kelly Klingelhoets and David Freitag.
Fifty elementary and junior high wrestlers from Turtle Lake were among the 557 wrestlers who competed in the 6th annual Turtle Lake Youth Wrestling Tournament sponsored by the Turtle Lake Booster Club. Forty-six schools were represented in the tournament. Turtle Lake finished firth in the team race. The Lakers had 11 first place finishers. They included Michael Wanner, Gabe Stoppelmoor, Jim Klingelhoets, Matthew Wanner, Michael Knight, Kenton Olsvig, Mark Ingham, Kelly Klingelhoets, Gordy Jones, Tom Klingelhoets and Jeremy Raffesberger.

Turtle Lake high school students learned more about the career opportunities in the Finance field during an Open House held at the WITI-Rice Lake campus recently. The students were given information on investments for formation on investments for today. Students attended were Lori Jansen, Julie Checkalski, Collette Berg, Cheri Peterson, Garrett Peterson, Brian Nessen, Lisa Elfers, Pam Outcalt, Barb Halverson, along with teacher Dave Ritsche.
Wheels for Life Bike-A-Thon Chairman Jeff Becker is asking Turtle Lake area residents to join the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Wheels For Life Bike-A-Thon in Turtle Lake on Saturday, May 10, 1986. A safe 1-mile course has been laid out to protect the bikers from traffic. Volunteer helpers will supervise the event and see that all aspects of safety are met.
The Knights of Columbus, Council 7848, of Turtle Lake, will hold their monthly Pancake Breakfast at St. Ann’s Center in Turtle Lake on Sunday, April 20. Serving of pancakes, sausage, apple sauce, orange juice, coffee or milk will begin at 8:30 a.m. At the conclusion of the breakfast, the drawing for the Winter Raffle will be held. Prizes to be awarded are: 1st – $75; 2nd – $50; 3rd – $40; 4th – $30; and 5th – $25.

Daylight Savings time begins at 2:00 a.m. Sunday, April 25. Set your clocks ahead one hour when you retire Saturday and you will be on time for your Sunday activities.
With the Class of “76” almost at the end of their careers at Turtle Lake High School, their thoughts are being directed toward the future. Last year eight $100.00 scholarships were awarded to the 1975 seniors. This assistance was received through our community scholarship fund. We will have close to 60 students graduating this year, and your help will be a tremendous factor in their final decision to enter a field of technical or professional study so necessary in today’s modern society.
The Nutritious Meals program for Senior Citizens will once again be held in the Legion Hall in Turtle Lake beginning this Friday, April 23. Since the fire that destroyed the offices of Impact Seven, this Senior Citizen program has beenheld in Timothy Hall at Zion Lutheran Church in Turtle Lake while Impact Seven used the Legion Hall as their temporary offices.
The Turtle Lake track team convincingly defeated Spooner and Shell Lake in a triple dual at Spooner on Tuesday, April 13. In their meet against Shell Lake they won by a score of 97-29. Against Spooner they won 82-45. Highlights of the meet were Carl Stauner’s three firsts, one in the shot put, one in the 880 yard run and one in the 880 yard relay. The Lakers also won every field event.
