A 34-year old Barron resident who was on probation for prior convictions, has been charged with hit and run resulting in death and homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle for the death of a 26-year old Almena man on Wednesday, January 28.
“I would like to say thank you to the St. Croix Casino in Turtle Lake and the Rice Lake Curling Club for their donations to help provide transportation to a musical at the History Theater in St. Paul, MN and the opportunity to experience curling in Rice Lake,” said Steve Eichman, local coordinator of this area’s Academic Year in American and PAX Foundation.
Chandler Galatowitsch placed third at 106 lbs. and Dahlton Johnson was third at 126 lbs. to lead the Turtle Lake/Clayton wrestlers at the 54th annual Lakeland Conference Wrestling Tournament held on Saturday at Cameron High School. Other TC placewinners included Nick Stesniak – fourth at 170 lbs., Morgan Vennie – fifth at 145 lbs. and Kevin Prinsen – sixth at 182 lbs.
Nadia Alexander scored a career-high 20 points and the defense never allowed the Bears to take the lead as the Lakers tolled to a 47-40 win last Friday night at home. The win pushed the Lakers to .500 in conference at 5-5 and knocked the Bears into a second place tie with Northwood at 7-2. Alexander earned scoring honors, going 9 of 14 from the floor and 2 of 3 from the line for a game high 20 points. Taylor Schneider followed with 15 while Kim Martin added 8.
Leading 43-42 following a Collin Hoffman basket with 8.2 seconds to go, the Laker defense fell asleep as Clayton’s Brandon Gilbertson brought the ball the length of the floor to score the go-ahead basket with 1.9 on the clock. Hoffman’s final attempt banged off the backboard, completing a collapse that saw the Lakers hold leads at the end of the first three quarters before losing the contest 44-43. Collin Hoffman led the Lakers with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. Andrew Davis had 12 points and Cole Herzan added 10.

For the seventh year Turtle Lake Parkview United Methodist Church sent a team to Rio Bravo, Mexico under the direction of Volunteers In Mission. For the past seven years the team members have built twenty-two “casitas” (houses) and a pair of two-room schoolhouses for the less fortunate families in Rio Bravo. This year’s team consisted to 31 members. The Turtle Lake group was Pastor Nancy Allen, Kenneth Beach, Harvey and Bev Becker, Adeline Freer, Ruby Nykanen, Robert Solberg, Albin Peterson, Karen Peterson, Bradley Peterson, Alexandria Murtaugh, Michael and Shayleen Ottman, Cari Cornelius, Eunice Swenson and Lynn and Ethan Kettenacker.
Mrs. Molls third grade students recently began a “Let’s Give Change To Make Change” campaign in which they decorated coffee cans, made posters and collected change to help with the tsunami victims. The third graders put up the posters around school and then went around the elementary school daily, collecting change fore the cause. Helping out with the campaign were high school students from Ms. Schradle’s class, who held a bake sale. The third graders collected over $800.00 in total donations and the high schoolers chipped in another $189.00 from the bake sale.
The Turtle Lake/Clayton wrestling team put together a good showing last weekend as they crowned three Conference Champions and had two third place finishers. The Lakeland Conference tournament was held in Cameron on Saturday, February 5th. Winners included Bryant Rouzer (112-lbs), 3rd place; Logan Paulson (103-lbs.), Gabe Stoppelmoor (152-lbs.) and Kenton Olsvig (145-lbs.), all Conference Champs; and Jim Klingelhoets (135-lbs.), 3rd place.
After defeating the Prairie Farm Panthers nearly a month ago, the Laker gals were looking forward to putting some wins on the board and gaining momentum for the tournament, but the reverse has happened. The Lakers have been winless since January 14 and added two more losses this past week, 49-41 to Frederic and 68-20 to the Clayton Bears. Kayla Scheps and Ashley Sollman led the Lakers with 13 apiece against the Vikings while Kayla led the Lakers against Clayton with 13.
The Laker guys endured a busy week this past week and added three more wins, 69-50 over Cameron, a Parent’s Night win over Frederic, and a 52-50 win over the Clayton Bears. Beau Harris led the Lakers with 27 against Cameron. Nate Warner added 15. Against Clayton it was Harris leading the way with 18. Kyle Stalpes added 10.

The Turtle Lake Village Board, with a 4-1 vote, decided to purchase the 38-acre parcel of land on the south side of Hwys. 8 & 63, owned by Richard and Jacki Rosenbush. Trustee Nick Kathrine cast the dissenting vote and Trustees Dave Ritsche and Darrell Peterson were absent.
The Turtle Lake Police Department has received their new mobile video camera this past Monday. The unit was acquired through the WisDOT Mobile Video Camera Acquisition Program in which 75% of the cost of the unit was paid by the Department of Transportation, up to $1500.00, aith the remaining 25% being paid by the Village.
Jesse Hoff won the conference championship at 130-lbs. and Tom Kasper finished second at 125-lbs. at the 34th annual Lakeland Conference Wrestling Tournament in Frederic on Saturday. Andy Koenig placed third at 119-lbs., Troy Broker was 4th at 152-lbs. while Joey Downing (135), Chad Andersen (145), Justin Gamache (160), Nick Bylander (171) and Aaron Flottum (189) each placed 5th.
Sixteen students in grades four through six from Turtle Lake Elementary School attended a Young Authors Program at WITC-Rice Lake on Saturday, February 4. Students from nineteen other school districts also participated. Students attending from Turtle Lake included Tim Richardson, Sandra Swank, Brianne Wurtinger, Tara Johnson, Jamie Hoffman, Laura Greschner, Tiffany Feldhacker, Kelly Matye, Andrea Kasper, Nicole Hoffman, Jackie Matye, Bethany Becker, Amanda Cook, Janel Fick, Krista Wilson and Teri Cross.

February 7, 1985
On Monday, February 4, 1985, at approximately 78:00 p.m., the bodies of two while males were discovered by Polk County Sheriff’s Department officers in the basement of their Horseshoe Lake residence in Beaver Township. Both victims had died of apparent gunshot wound. Law enforcement officers were called to the residence by concerned neighbors who stated no one had been seen at the residence since January 30, 1985 and they noticed that mail had not been picked up from the mail box.
Two new County Directors for Northwest Homes’ Self-Help Housing projects in Barron and Polk Counties have been named by the organization’s Board of Directors, according to departing Executive Director Mary Ann Perga. Doug Drake, Ridgeland, will direct the project in Barron County while Gregory Hoelscher, Amery, will direct the project in Polk County.
Debbie Carlson reached a major plateau in her basketball carr last Friday evening as she scored 25 points in the Lakerettes 61-32 victory over Clayton to put her over the 1000 points scored career record. Debbie led all scorers with 25 points. Jodi Hart added 11 in the win.
Kevin Klugow, a senior wrestler in the 155-lbs. weight class at Turtle Lake High School, bought home the championship trophy from the Lakeland Conference wrestling tournament in Shell Lake last Saturday, Kevin did an excellent job of coming back to defeat some people he had lost to earlier in the year. The Lakers had a chance for another champion in the 185-lbs. weight class. Stuart Bents, another senior wrestler, lost in the finals to undefeated Robbi Witthoft of Clear Lake to finish second.
The Turtle Lake Lakers parlayed balanced scoring and clutch freethrow shooting into two West Lakeland Conference victories last week and remained in the thick of the conference title race. Tuesday night, at Minong, the Lakers won the contest 61-50. On Friday night it was the Lakers with a 59-53 overtime win over the Clayton Bears. Chris Schradle led the Laker with 20 over Minong. Mike Bussewitz added 15 and Lynn Dietrich had 11. Against Clayton, Ron Hanson led the Lakers with 18. Mike Bussewitz had 15 and Chris Schradle had 14.

January 30, 1975
“Going once!” “Going twice!” “Sold!” These familiar words were heard in the ballroom at Breneman’s Night Club Sunday afternoon, January 26, at the snowmobile auction held by Danca’s Country Side Sales. Auctioneer Bob Paffel worked with the approximately 125 persons that attended and bid on their favorite model. Joe and Gene Danca, of Country Side Sales, stated they got the idea to hold a snowmobile auction after seeing them in the metropolitan areas. The led to think persons in our area would also like to purchase their first or possibly second or third machines in this manner.
Winter Wonder Week I, sponsored by the Turtle Lake High School Student Council, FFA, FHA and Lumikonats Ski Club was held January 20 – 25. Several activities were planned to give the students and faculty a chance to enjoy winter activities. Chosen by their respective classes to reign as the royal court over the carnival week were – Freshmen Jill Sorum and Don Sorenson; Sophomores Jean Ritsche and Brian Jansen; Juniors Julie Paulson and Jim Sorum; and Seniors Terry Weber and Roger Bruner.
On Thursday, January 23, the Turtle Lake Lakers left Turtle Lake in hopes of a conference win over the Bruce Red Raiders but returned home with another defeat. The Lakers, who had to forfeit their first two weight classes, trailed the Red Raiders all the way through the match. Bruce comfortable won by a score of 39-21. Winning for the Lakers was Gord Klingelhoets (132-lbs.) with a 7-5 decision, Jim Sorum (138-lbs.) with a 3-2 decision, Bill Dieters (145-lbs.) with a 7-2 decision, Terry Willers (167-lbs.) with a pin and Mike Schneider (Hwt.) with a pin.
The Clear Lake Warriors held off a second half rally as they defeated the Turtle Lake Lakers at Turtle Lake Friday, January 24, by a score of 53-48. Marv Dietrich led all scorers for the evening with a season high 30 points, which was almost two-thirds of the Lakers total points.
On Monday, January 27, the Siren Dragons came to Turtle Lake for a contest with the local Lakerettes. They returned home with the short end of a 32-14 final score. Lakerette Jackie Anderson led all scorers with 11 points. Roxie Hoffman and Joan Swanson each had 6 points.
