The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture, is responding to the detection of avian influenza in an additional two poultry flocks in Wisconsin. There are now three confirmed cases in Wisconsin.
On Friday, April 17, fourteen members of the Turtle Lake High School forensics team competed in state competition on the UW-Madison campus. Participants that advanced all competed as part of four group interpretation teams. The two junior teams achieved a bronze status (21/25), and the freshmen and senior teams received a gold ranking of 25/25. It was the third gold ranking in a row for Megan Knight and Max Molls and the second for Cassidy Fredrick. Students participating were Adam Jenkinson, freshman; juniors Jamie Szalecki, Amanda Gutting, Andrea Lutz, Danielle Nyreen and Katarina Ambrozaivo; senior, Megan Knight; juniors, Jaclyn Lee and Kelly Caitlin; freshmen, Bailey Peterson and Athena Hiemstra; seniors, Cassidy Fredrick and Max Molls, and; freshman Jonah Kahl.
The Turtle Lake track competed in two track meets last week. They traveled to Webster on Monday, April 13 and to Siren on Thursday, April 16. For the girls, Mary Hoffman was champion in the 800-meter run. For the boys, Andrew Davis was first in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash in Webster. In Siren Mady Cardinal was champion in the long jump for the girls while Andrew Davis was first in the 100-meter dash.
McKenna Larson tossed a complete game win as the Clatyon/Turtle Lake girls softball team posted a 13-6 road win against the Cameron Comets Thursday afternoon, April 16.

A project that was started in history class at the Turtle Lake schools in 2003 has been kept alive by the Knights of Columbus. That project was to collect six-million pop tabs, representing the number of Jewish people killed during World War II. Grand Knight Nick Cordes and Knight Ray Hall delivered wight more boxes of tabs. That brings the total number of tabs donated to the Ronald McDonald House to 2,700,201.
The school board met Tuesday, April 12 with a full agenda facing them and a packed board room. Topping the discussionsn for the evening turned out to be the Administrator evaluation process, along with coaching assignments, the summer Ag program and a Spanish trip to Spain.
With budget concerns still hovering, the Village Board unanimously approved the hiring of a full-time police officer and heard from Police Chief Gabe that the department would offer one of the candidates a part-time position. .In addition, discussions took place regarding the hiring of three additional officers to fill part-time positions.
The Turtle Lake/Clayton baseball team’s record fell to 1-3 this past week with losses to Elmwood, on the road, and Luck at home. Nate Smith led the Turtle Lake/Clayton hitters against Elmwood in a 10-4 loss by going two for three with one rbi, scoring once and collecting a pair of stolen bases. The guys also dropped a 19-1 loss to the Luck Cardinals in a five-inning affair.
The Turtle Lake/Clayton girls split a pair of games last week. On Monday, April 11 they lost a 23-12 battle with the Northwood Evergreens. The girls turned things around on Thursday, April 14 when they traveled to Webster and came awau with a 21-11 five-inning win. Missy Cimfl led the Laker hitters against Northwood, going two for four with a run scored and one rbi. Brittany Graber crossed the plate three times while Emma Molls and Breanna Thompson each scored twice. Against Webster, Brittany Graber was two for three at the plate, scoring three times.
The Laker guys and girls track team competed in the Cumberland meet on Monday, April 18. The girls placed in the 1600 meter run, 4 x 200 relay, 400 meter run, 4 x 100 relay, 800 meter run and the long jump. The boys placed in the shot put, 1600 meter run, 4 x 100 relay, discus and 3200 meter run.

“I’m happy to report that to date we have 24 school districts that have voted to approve the purchase of the former Dahlberg Electronics building from Bausch and Lomb for our new central office and only 3 that have voted against the move,” reported Bob Rykal, CESA 11 Administrator, at the April meeting of the Turtle Lake Village Board Monday evening.
Students from Turtle Lake High School participated in the 25th annual Agricultural Technology Contest held Saturday, April 1, at UW-River Falls. Approximately 1061 students attended from 74 schools. Turtle Lake students participating were Brooke Broker, Jamie Elfers, Malissa Selle, Lura Young, Jesse Vorwald, Eric Quade, Jeff Vorwald, Jodie Gough, Julie Schmidt, JoDee Peterson and Jill Gough.
Turtle Lake third grade students and their teahcers, Mr. Ed Hougdahl and Mr. Jim Ellis, recently visited the Bank of Turtle Lake to express their personal “Thank Yous” to the local business for purchasing the tickets and enabling the students to attend the Shrine Circus.

April 19, 1985
The Knights of Columbus members are again conducting their statewide fund drive to help the Mentally Retarded, This will be the twelfth year that the over 40,000 members of the Knights of Columbus has held the drive. Grand Knight, Clare Gross, said Joseph J. Annabring Council No. 7848 of Turtle Lake, will join the other 230 councils in Wisconsin in the benefit on April 26 – 28, 1985. The Knights and their helpers will offer a “special” size candy roll which will have the imprint, “Knights of Columbus – Help Mentally Retarded”. Everyone in turn will be asked to make a contribution.
Ten Turtle Lake high school students will participate in the State Forensics Contest this Friday and Saturday in Madison. They are, Roni Gehrman – Solo Acting; Julie Checkalski – Prose; Lori Hansen – Storytelling; Missy Warner – Prose; Brian Nelson – Play Acting; Paula McGrath, Chris Nelson and Karalyn Littlefield – Poetry; Marvin Flettre – Play Acting; and Garret Peterson – Special Occasion. The studetns are coached by Mrl Dale Mueller.
Rex Nykanen and Jeff Klugow both wrestled very well against stron competition to win their championships in the junior high tournament held recently in Barron.This was the second torunament win in a row for Jeff, whose season record now stands at 17-4. Rex also has had an outstanding year so far with an 11-3 overall record.
With a nucleus of five Lakerettes and seven Laker letterwinners, the Turtle Lake boys and girls track teams have begun competition. Returning letterwinners are Jenny Bearheart, Wanda Clark, Kathy Checkalski, Mark Oldroyd, Jim Sorenson, Gary Peterson Karalyn Littlefield, Kevin Dobberschutz, Ron Hansen, Debbie Carlson, Cory Kleinschmidt and Kevin Wick.

April 24, 1975
Having just received accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the camera caught John Sauerberg, principal of Turtle Lake Senior High School, Turtle Lake, Wisconsin, about to be greeted by friends, including Donald C. Roush, president of NCA, the nation’s largest regional accrediting agency, and academic vice-president of New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Forty-two present and retired public school administrators, who are graduates of the University of Wisconsin – River Falls, and their spouses dined with University administrators and faculty of the College of Education on compus April 4. Receiving a recognition plaque from Chancellor George Field was Olaf Pederson, administrator of the Turtle Lake Public School.
The Turtle Lake Fire District held a special meeting at the Fire Hall Monday evening, April 21 to let the volunteer firemen acquaint themselves with the operation of the new pumper unit that has just been purchased. The new Ford C800 was purchased from Turtle Lake Motor Company and the fire fighting equipment was installed at North Branch, Minnesota.
The Valedictorian, Salutatorian and honor graduates of Turtle Lake High School have been named. They are: Valedictorian – Dan Ritsche; Salutatorian – Cindy Fredrick; Honor Students – John Halberg, Joan Swanson and Cheryl Mewes. Dan and Cindy will deliver their respective addresses durng commencement exercises on May 18.
