During the recent holidays, the Turtle Lake Tech Education Department was fortunate to receive two donations that have made classes more productive, and exposed students to new learning techniques. Neil Bakke of Monarch Paving was instrumental in the donation of a 45-ton Uni-Hydro Iron Worker.
Attention! Calling on all past Turtle Lake FFA members. This is the year of big milestones for the Turtle Lake school district. The school is celebrating its 100th year and the FFA is celebrating the close of its 75th year.
A chili supper fundraiser will be held Thursday, January 21, from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the former bank building to help with raising funds for renovation of the building for the new public library. Judy’s in the Country is catering the chili. Cheese, crackers, bars and a beverage are included. Friends of the Library need to raise $150,000 to remodel the former Dairy State Bank building into an expanded and much-needed library.
The Turtle Lake/Clayton wrestling team hosted Unity last Thursday night in a home dual meet at Clayton. The Eagles came out on top 51-7, but there were several good matches. Jordan Rouzer brought the crowd to its feet during his close 4-3 loss at 285 lbs.
The Laker guys traveled to Prairie Farm last Thursday evening for a conference basketball matchup. The Lakers had an early 5-4 lead before the Panthers got a Quinn Larson hoop and ran away from the Lakers for a 66-50 win. Erik Bauer led the Lakers with 10. Jim Varone and Nick Thill added 8 each.
The Laker girls picked up a pair of wins this past week as they got past the Elmwood/Plum City Wolves, 61-40, Tuesday night, January 5 at home, and the Prairie Farm Panthers, 52-36, last Thursday night in Prairie Farm. Taylor Schneider earned game scoring honors against the Wolves with 25. Mariah Capra had 11 and Kelly Catlin chipped in 7. Schneider went over the 40-point mark again as she led the way with a game high 42 against the Panthers.

Approximately three inches of snow fell on the area Monday night and caused problems for travelers Tuesday morning due to the icy conditions on the highways.
On December 23, 2005, a group of the Turtle Lake Knights of Columbus served some of the seniors (who are with the Meals on Wheels program) a delicious spaghetti dinner at the Legion Hall. This is the second year that they have treated them to this dinner. The seniors wish to say “Thank You. It was a very special time for us.”
The Laker girls were in non-conference action Tuesday night, January 10th, when they went on the road to Cumberland. After a good first quarter, in which the girls were only down one, 11-10, the Beavers turned up the pressure, holding the Lakers scoreless in the fourth as they ran away with a 55-20 win. Breanna Thompson led the Lakers with 8 points.
The Lakers played host to the Prairie Farm Panthers Tuesday night, and after a close first quarter of action pulled away the final three quarters for a comfortable 58-43 win. Kyle Wick led the Laker attach with 15, including a pair of threes. Kyle Stalpes added 13 and John Wick had 12.
Lance Hougdahl won the championship at 140 lbs. and Gabe Stoppelmoor won the 160 lb. title at the Freedom Invitational on Saturday, January 14th. Bryant Rouzer (130 lbs.), Jim Klingelhoets (135 lbs.) and Mike Jones (189 lbs.) each finished third. This was the fourth time that Gabe has won the Freedom Tournament and he was voted the outstanding wrestler of the tournament.

January 11, 1996
The St. Croix Chippewa donated a car to the Barron County Sheriff’s Department Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program on Friday, December 29. The donation was made in memory of Rice Lake Police Officer Michael Baribeau and Barron County Investigator David Strohmeyer. Both officers were shot during a Rusk County call that resulted in a standoff on December 18, 1995. Officer Baribeau died as a result of his injuries. Officer Strohmeyer was seriously injured and, following intensive hospital care, returned home on January 4.
Turtle Lake Schools will hold an Open House dedication on Sunday, January 21, 1996. The Open House is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. with the dedication ceremony to take place in the new gym at 2:00 p.m. The school will be open to the public both before and after the Deciation Ceremony. The board of education hopes as many guest as possible attend to see the district’s new facility.
Last Friday night the Laker gals faced the top rated team in the Clayton Bears on the home court and were handed a 68-39 loss. Although the score doesn’t reflet it, the Lakers played a good game considering who they were facing. Teresa Kasper led the Lakers with 14 and Maisa Rouzer added 7.
The Lakers came back from the holiday break and edged the Laker Holcombe Chieftains last Thursday night, 74-58, on the local floor to go to 7-0. Ryan Schradle led all scorers for Turtle Lake with 16. Matt Torgerson added 15 and Matt Richter and Keefe Tarman each added 11.
Andy Koenig finished 2nd at 130 lbs. and Ben Naylor was 2nd at 140 lbs. as the Lakers placed six wrestlers in the top four in their weight class at the 26th annual New Richmond Invitational wrestling Tournament on saturday. Troy broker placed 3rd at 189 lbs. and Ron Pich (135), Chad Andersen (145) and Nick Bylander (171) were each 4th.

January 9, 1986
The Barron Family Association of Self-Help Builders and Northwest Homes of Wisconsin will host an Open House on Sunday, January 12, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., in Barron. The new Self-Help homes are located on Golf View Avenue, north of the Yellow River off Mill Street.
Bruce Davis, a member of the WITI-Rice Lake Campus Augo Body advisory committee, met with committee members for the Fall meeting held recently. Prior to the meeting, WITI-Rice Lake Region advisory committee members were guests at an Appreciation Dinner held on the campus.
Poor freethrow shooting and a second half defensive breakdown doomed the Turtle Lake Lakers to a 92-60 defeat at the hands of the hot shooting Siren Dragons in the final pre-Christmas West Lakeland basketball game on December 20 at Turtle Lake. The Lakers, playing without leading scorer Ron Hanson, were led by David Anderson with 14 and David Fuson with 12.The Turtle Lake 6th grade basketball players are learning how to win the right way – as a team. Saturday morning, January 4, they hosted the Unity Eagles and with a good offensive effort scored a 34-20 win over the visitors. Brian Thill led the way with 16 points.

January 15, 1976
The coin laundry in Turtle Lake, that has been operated by the Rodney Becker family for the past thirteen years, will be closed permanently on Tuesday, January 20. The room that is being used by the present facility is needed in the remodeling project being undertaken by Becker’s Super Valu Store and scheduled to begin in the very near future.
Turtle Laek Fire District Chief, Frank Klingelhoets. would like to announce that a supply of Tot Finder Stickers has been received and any persons wishing to receive one or more may pick them up at the Turtle Lake Library. According to Chief Klingelhoets, the Turtle Lake Fire District purchased these stickers to reinforce the fire rescue program.
Time has been extended until January 31 for senior citizens to apply for one of twenty moderate rent apartment units for the elderly now being built by the Turtle Lake Nonprofit Housing Corporation in the village. As of this time nineteen applications have been received by the housing corporation for reservation of an apartment unit for occupancy when construction is completed in late spring or early summer.
The Turtle Lake Lakers hosted the Clayton Bears in their first game since the holiday break last Friday, Januyary 9, and were handed their third loss of the season, 53-51, in a contest that ran into an overtime period before it was decided. Marv Dietrich led all scorers with 29 points. Jim Wick added 10.
The Turtle Lake wrestling squad recorded its first conference loss of the season as they were defeated by the Cameron Comets, 29-23, in a match at Cameron on Thursday, January 8. The teams were fairly evenly balanced as the match went into the final heavyweight pairing before it was decided. Winning for the Lakers were Greg Hoisington, Mike Plenty, Bryan McCann, Todd Ostermann, Terry Willers and Bill Soderholm.
