With the final year of a five-year school referendum fast approaching (20-16-17_ talk of an immediate referendum has begun. Many residents will question whether or not this is the wave of the future for school districts, and the answer may be yes.
The Turtle Lake Technology Education Department held an Open House Monday, February 8 for viewing of the newly developed Fab Lab (fabrication laboratory). Through grants and donations the Fab Lab has been equipped with 3-D printers, plasma and vinyl cutters, laser engravers and computers and software for students to learn trades with. Student projects were also on display. Attendees had the opportunity to talk with the students and instructor, Mr. Dale Kohler, regarding applications available in the Fab Lab. The Open House was well attended by residents, parents, neighboring school officials and legislative representatives.
Chandler Galatowitsch placed third at 106 lbs., Tyler Quade was fourth at 113, and Kevin Prinsen was fourth at 182 to lead the Turtle Lake/ Clayton wrestlers at the 55th annual Lakeland Conference Wrestling Tournament held on Saturday at Cameron High School. Other TC placewinners included Bren- dan Swagger – fifth at 195, Morgan Vennie – sixth at 145, Brandon Hansen – sixth at 152, Jordan Rouzer – sixth at 220, and Thomas Hoffman – seventh at 138.
It was a four-point Laker lead at the 10:59 mark of the second half when Mariah Capra caught fire and dished up 10 points as the Lakers went on a 14-4 run and rolled to a 53-39 win over the Webster Tigers at home last Friday night. Taylor Schneider led the Lakers with 19. Mariah Capra added 15.
After dropping a 13-point decision to the Clear Lake Warriors on the road last Thursday night, the Laker guys rebounded with a 53-39 home win over the Webster Tigers on Friday night. The Lakers stand at 8-8 overall for the season, 3-6 in the conference. Cameron sits on top with an unblemished record and Clayton is right behind with a single loss on the season. Cole Herzan led the way with 20. Nick Thill and Erik Bauer had 11 each and Caden Torgerson added 10.

The Turtle Lake Parent Teachere Student Association sponsored a Candidate Forum Sunday evening, February 12 to provide an unbiased platform for the school district residents to get to know the school board candidates and their views regarding several school issues. Five candidates had shown interest in vying for two positions in this year’s election, prompting a Primary to narrow the field to four. This year’s candidates are incumbents Linda Flottum and Bill Itzin, along with Sally Gores and Lois Crawley. Ingrid Beach had shown interest but withdrew from the election due to health reasons.
On Friday, January 27, at 2:30 p.m. in the Turtle Lake High School Auditorium, students from Turtle Lake High School were inducted into the National Honor Society. The new 2006 inductees included Courtney Colburn, Katie Dipprey, Brittany Graber, Lauren Hanson, Andrea Kraemer, Kylie Krecker, Emma Molls, Kari Pabst and Kayla Scheps.
The Laker guys kept a firm grasp on their Central Lakeland Conference lead with a convincing 68-51 win over the Prairie Farm Panthers Friday night in Prairie Farm. Kyle Wick led all scorers with 18 for the Lakers. Dave Sollman added 14, Kyle Stalpes had 13 and Ross Morton chipped in 11.
The search continues for the Laker girls’ first win of the season as they dropped a 58-27 contest last Thursday night to the Frederic Viking on the home floor. Courtney Colburn led the Lakers with 11.
With four regional champions and one runner-up, the Turtle Lake/Clayton wrestlers will have five sectional qualifiers competing at the Ladysmith Sectional on Saturday. Lance Hougdahl (140-lbs.), Gabe Stoppelmoor (152-lbs.), Patrick O’Connell (171-lbs.) and Mike Jones (189-lbs.) were each regional champions last Saturday in Bruce. Chaz Dayton also qualified for Sectionals with a second place finish at 160-lbs.

Five Turtle Lake band students traveled to Eau Claire last Saturday, February 3, to audition for state music groups. Anna Skrupky, Kelly Stary, Erin Tronrud, Deidra Tuxen and Ginger Heintz made the trip. The auditions are held on two dates and at three sitess each date. Wisconsin’s finest high school musicians auditioned for chairs in the state’s orchestra, band, choir and jazz band. Two thousand students auditioned for last year’s groups.
Sean Kirwan (152) and Aaron Flottum (171) each finished 2nd to lead Turtle Lake to a third place team finish at the 35th Annual Lakeland Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at Lake Holcombe. Andy Koenig (130), Chad Andersen (1450, Zach Hansen (160) and Troy Broker (189) placed 3rd.
The Lakers added a couple of more wins to their 95-96 basketball record with dominating wins over the Prairie Farm Panthers, 73-42, last Tuesday night and the Clear Lake Warriors, 73-59, last Thursday night. Matt Richter earned game high honors with 15 for the Lakers against Prairie Farm. Jeff Roff added 12, Matt Torgerson 11 and Ryan Schradle 10. Matt Torgerson turned in 22 points for the Lakers against Clear Lake. Tadd Peterson added 13 and Keefe Tarman 11.
The Laker gals came out on the winning end last Tuesday night as they traveled to Siren and handed the Dragons a 34-30 defeat. Teresa Kasper led the Lakers with 11. Michelle Carlson chipped in 6.

Karalyn Littlefield, Turtle Lake FFA President, and Mr. Donald Dipprey, Turtle Lake FFA Advisor, will attend the 1986 Farm Bureau-FFA Farm Forum in Neenah on February 14 and 15. The theme for the Farm Forum is “Leaders for the New Fields of Agriculture”.
Camelia Lake, located in the Village of Clayton in Polk County, has had a poor fish population for many years, and the lake has received little recreational use. Now, thanks to a cooperative project between the Village, the Department of Natural Resources and the Richardson Sportsmen’s Club, Camelia Lake should be the site of many happy and successful anglers in several years.
The Laker wrestlers evened their conference record at 3-3 last Thursday with a well wrestled win at Bruce. The team started strong in the first couple of weight classes and never lost the lead. Winning for the Lakers were Steve Yousten, Tom Yousten, Vince Kobernick, Shawn Yeske, Dan Becker, Kevin Thill, Brian Chuchwar and Jeff Heintz.
The Turtle Lake Lakers’ two game win streak came to a halt last week with losses to the top two teams in the West Lakeland Conference. League leading Shell Lake came to town Tuesday, spotted Turtle Lake a 2-0 lead, then rode the one-two scoring punch of Eric Penning and Pat Quenan to a 64-52 victory. Ron Hanson led the Lakers with 16. Dave Anderson added 14. On Friday night the Turtle Lake players and fans battled the automatic blizzard that occurs every year when the Lakers play at Siren. For the third time this year the Lakers were unable to handle Travis Hinze, who rolled in 26 points for Siren in a 83-67 win. Rom Hanson led the Lakers with 18. Dave Fuson added 14 while Dave Anderson and Cory Kleinschmidt had 11 each.

The Turtle Lake teachers voted Thursday, February 5 by secret ballot to call a work stoppage at 8:00 a.m. Monday, February 16 if no contract settlement has been reached by that time. “We have been attempting to negotiate a contract for the 1975-76 school year since last February,” commented an NUE representative.
A large crowd attended the Open Forum with the eight school board candidates last Thursday evening, February 5 in the high school auditorium. Mr. Donnie Bown, of Concerned Citizen’s Committee, was the moderator for the evening. Candidates included Otto Becker, Donovan Niemann, Richard Oldroyd, James Chuchwar, Gerd Bents, Ronald King, Paul Pett and Frank Gubasta.
A large number of drivers and a large crowd of spectators cheering them on attended the Sno-Lakers Drag ‘76 last Sunday, February 8. The full quarter mile drag track on Horseshoe Lake remained in excellent condition throughout the day’s activities despite temperatures in the mid 30s.
Tuesday, February 3 was probably the happiest night all season for the Turtle Lake Laker basketball team as the final seconds ticked off the clock showing that the Lakers had defeated the 18th ranked team in the state, the Cameron Comets, by a score of 56-47. Marv Dietrich led all scorers with 28 points and pulled down 18 big rebounds. Jim Wick followed with 15 points.
The Turtle Lake Lakerettes traveled to Holcombe Tursday, January 29 only to return home on the short end of a 20-15 final score. Cathy Harland led the Lakers with 6 points.
The Lakeland Conference Wrestling Tournament was held at Shell Lake, February 7. Wrestling squads from Bruce, Cameron, Clear Lake, Flambeau, Prairie Farm, Shell Lake and Turtle Lake participated in the event. Flambeau took the overall championship with 114-1/2 points. The Lakers finished sixth with 52-1/2 points.
